Magnesium supplement helps boost brainpower

Magnesium supplement helps boost brainpower

Magnesium, an essential element is found in dark leafy vegetables like spinach and some fruits. Those who are less than 400 mg daily, are at risk for allergies, asthma and heart disease, among other conditions. In 2004 Guosong Liu and his colleagues at MIT discovered that magnesium may have a positive impact on learning and memory.
They followed the development of a new magnesium compound - magnesium L-threonate (MGT) - this is more effective than conventional oral supplements in the promotion of magnesium in the brain, and tested it on rats.

"We have found that elevation of brain magnesium significant improvement in spatial and associative memory in both young rats and led," said Liu, now director of the Center for Learning and Memory at Tsinghua University. "If MgT is proving to be safe and effective in humans, these results may be a significant impact on public health." Liu is co-founder of Magceutics, a California-based company developing drugs for the prevention and treatment of age-related memory decline and Alzheimer's disease.

"Half the population of industrialized countries have a magnesium deficit, which increases with age. If normal

or even higher levels of magnesium can be maintained, we may be able to significantly slow age-related loss of cognitive function and perhaps prevent or treat of diseases that affect cognitive function, "says Liu.

To the molecular mechanisms of these MGT-induced memory enhancement to understand, the researchers examined the changes in the functional and structural properties induced by synapses. They found that in young and old rats, MgT increased plasticity at synapses, the connections between neurons, strengthened, and the density of synapses in the hippocampus, a brain region critical for learning and memory.

Helped Susumu Tonegawa at MIT Picower Institute for Learning and Memory implementation of the first experiments, the behavioral changes showed that magnesium increases memory in aged rats. Min Zhou lab at the University of Toronto, the show helped increase the synaptic plasticity in magnesium-treated rats.

This study highlights not only the importance of adequate daily diet with magnesium, but also suggests the benefits of magnesium-aging treatments for the associated memory decline, "said Tonegawa. Clinical studies in Beijing are now studying the relationship between body magnesium status and cognitive function in elderly and Alzheimer patients.

Face masks, hand hygiene curb spread of flu

Face masks, hand hygiene curb spread of flu

Reduce Regular facials and hand hygiene, transmission of infection during the influenza season, a new study shows.Researchers from the University of Michigan School of Public Health stated (UMSPH) by Allison E. Aiello, recruited more than 1,400 students live in the university.

Dormitories during the 2006-2007 influenza season. The participants were one of three groups: those who face masks, those who wore masks and using alcohol-based hand sanitizer or a controlled group that received no intervention was assigned.

The students were monitored for flu-like symptoms for six weeks. The participants so far a basic hand hygiene training video.

Patients in the hand hygiene and mask group received an alcohol-based hand sanitizer and written instructions for proper use of the mask and sanitizer. In the mask group, a written instructions to the face mask use only. The students began with the measures only after confirmation of influenza laboratory on the campus of the University of Michigan had been made.

Discovered in the hand sanitizer mask group, Aiello and researchers, a reduction in flu-like symptoms ranging from 35 to 51 percent compared with the control group, said a release UMSPH.

The findings were published online in the February issue of the Journal of Infectious Diseases.

Plasma jets could replace the dentist's drill

Plasma jets could replace the dentist's drill

The dentist drill could soon be a thing of the past. Plasma jets could be just as effective in the treatment of caries affected teeth - and a damn sight less painful. Firing low-temperature plasma jets on dentin - the fibrous structure beneath the tooth enamel - it was found that the level of dental bacteria to cut up to 10,000 times.

Scientists at the Leibniz Institute for Surface Modification changes and dentists from the University of Saarland zapped Common oral pathogens, including Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus casei with a plasma jet for 6, 12 or 18 seconds.

The longer the dentin was exposed to the plasma, were eliminated more bacteria.

Dr. Stefan plucking from the University of Saarland, said that the recent development was the cold plasmas of around 40 degrees Celsius great promise for use in dentistry.

The low temperature means that they kill the microbes while preserving the tooth. The pulp is in the middle of the tooth, including dentin, the blood supply and nerve damage associated with heat and must be avoided under all circumstances." Dr. Rupf said he was sure that would be disinfected with plasma technology caries are welcomed by patients and dentists.

Drilling is a very uncomfortable and sometimes painful experience," he said. "Cold Plasma, by contrast, is made an entirely non-contact method, which is very effective. Currently, there are a lot of progress in the field of plasma medicine, and clinical treatment of dental caries can be expected within three to five years.

Swine flu vaccine available

Swine flu vaccine available

Parents of young people aged from six months to five years are encouraged to take their children for the swine flu vaccination.Doctors are encouraging parents and guardians in the Great Yarmouth and Waveney area, that the vaccine is safe and for all children aged six months to five years.

Dr. Tim Morton, a GP in Beccles Medical Center, said: "Most parents recognize that this is a safe and tested vaccine and children are most affected by this virus.

"The swine flu pandemic has fortunately not been as bad as initially feared, but in a few deaths and many hospitalizations in this age group, and probably allowed the virus in the community for many months if not years, it seems wise and offer reasonable, the protection for this age group. "

The vaccine is aimed at all surgeries available following a local agreement between doctor and Primary Care Trust, NHS Yarmouth and Waveney, the jab offer to the thousands of children in the age group.
Dr. Shamsher Diu, Public Health Consultant for NHS Great Yarmouth and Waveney, said: "In line with the Department of Health guidance, we are rolling out the swine flu vaccination for children between six months and five years earlier this year at age began.

"I would urge all parents and carers with children under five years old ask your doctor to contact and book an appointment for vaccination. It is really important to protect the health of your child, your health and the health of people in your area . Remember, if you do not catch flu to pigs, you can not to anyone else!

"Family doctors have enough vaccine for everyone in the priority groups and order additional supplies as and when they need it."The Health Ministry has confirmed the priority groups for vaccine: Persons over six months old and are under 65 years in the current seasonal influenza vaccine clinical at-risk groups.

Pregnant women.

Household contacts of people with weakened immune systems such as people in close and regular contact with the patient on the treatment of cancer.

Persons aged 65 and over in the current seasonal influenza vaccine clinical at-risk groups. This does not include the otherwise healthy 65-year-olds, since they seem to have a natural immunity to the virus.

Children aged six months to five years.

Anyone who has flu-like symptoms are not to contact his family doctor, but instead the ring of the National Pandemic Influenza Service on 0800 1513100 or visit www.direct.gov.uk / pandemicflu.
To avoid catching flu or seasonal flu pigs using a tissue to catch sneezes, you dispose of the used tissue, where germs can linger and wash hands regularly.
